TODAY'S WAVES
Not much in the way of surf today. A pretty small day with a slight increase as the tide dropped.
MOMOKO HASEGAWA was out making the smallest waves look rideable. It's amazing how big a wave can look when you're lying down.

LOMILOMI SALMON
Last month, GURI 2 went to Hawaii for surfing and to do more plate lunch research. He has added a new topping to his lunches. LOMILOMI SALMON!
A huge mahalo to RYUJI YOSHIKAWA and the boys at PROLONGER for the interview they put together!
CLICK FOR PROLONGER INTERVIEW1990 SKIMBOARD magazine.
Some of you don't know it, but I used to be a pretty good skimboarder. These photos are from a magazine called SKIMBOARD. The first photo is of good friend, DEMIAN SCOTT, and it was the cover of the 1990 Jan/Feb/Mar issue. Exactly 20 years ago! The next photo is of good friend, BENNETT DeBEER, with his trademark fan of spray! The last is a photo of me. We were all really good friends and spent 4-8 hours a day at the beach.

フィンFINS
A new season beginning and I have some new longboard designs in my quiver. Time to start testing different fins. Thanks to GK CORP. , RAINBOW FIN CO. and LOKBOX for keeping me well covered with an endless supply of insane fins to choose from! One thing I really like about the LOKBOX system is that they feel the closest to glass on fins. The box is much stronger than other plugs, and they give you the ability to adjust your fins forward or back to the tail, changing the way your board rides completely. If you have a chance to try them, do it! They can change your surfing!
In my fin collection I have a wide array to choose from.
FRONT left to right: RFC5 stiff (4.5), ERIC ARAKAWA flex (4.6), RFC side bites stiff (4.5), RT3 side bites flex (4.5)
CENTER left to right: QUAD FINS AK2 (5.5X3.5), MR80 (4.75X4.5), PT QUAD (4.8X4.5) X2 (4.5X4.5)
BACK left to right: Rusty Preisendorfer FLEX FINS 9", 7". 5.25"
HAWAIIAN NONI
Ever since the "tennis elbow" started, I've been trying different methods to heal it. At first I went to physical therapy, which included massage and electrolysis. After a month, I noticed that the pain was actually worsening, so I stopped treatment. Next, my wife's uncle showed me how to use acupuncture, but I think I was missing the "hot spot" so I stopped that as well. Then I remembered my mother bring several kinds of HAWAIIAN NONI lotions for my daughter, and thought I'd try the "ICY HEAT" type.
I've been applying it nightly before bedtime for about 2 weeks now, and have noticed a definite change.

One of the things I like about winter is the chance to eat a lot of soup dishes that warm up the body. We usually eat kim chee nabe, which uses the winter vegetables and is nice and spicy. Today, we changed it up a little and made some SUKIYAKI. BUGGA WEN BROKE DA MOUT! (It was so delicious!)

A little history lesson...
Setsubun ("seasonal division") is a festival held on February 3 or 4, one day before the start of spring according to the Japanese lunar calendar. Setsubun is not a national holiday.
For many centuries, the people of Japan have been performing rituals with the purpose of chasing away evil spirits at the start of spring.
Around the13th century for example, it became a custom to drive away evil spirits by the strong smell of burning dried sardine heads, the smoke of burning wood and the noise of drums. While this custom is not popular anymore, a few people still decorate their house entrances with fish heads and holy tree leaves in order to deter evil spirits from entering.
In modern days, the most commonly performed setsubun ritual is the throwing of roasted beans around one's house and at temples and shrines across the country. When throwing the beans, you are supposed to shout "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" ("Devils out, happiness in"). Afterwards you should pick up and eat the number of beans, which corresponds to your age.

TODAY'S TEST RIDE
I tried OFUCHI'S new tri+quad HOLIDAY MODEL this morning and....
before I tell you how good it works, I'll tell you about the fins I chose. I tried a different quad set-up than what I normally ride on my DY4 model. I've been wanting to try these fins for a while, but the waves have been too small lately. So today was the day. Virgin fins on a virgin board.
First wave I caught, I knew this board was going to work good as a quad. And I also knew that I wanted this board in my quiver! It turns on a dime, and I can put it anywhere I want. Hopefully there will be some waves left tomorrow, so that I can try it out as a tri fin set-up.

Today I tried to find some waves but had no luck. I drove as far as Onjuku before giving up. Kamogawa was flat. Hebara was flat. Onjuku had the only rideable waves, but too small for me. Looks like a little surf tomorrow though. I hope it wraps into Kamogawa.

SUNNY+MACHADO
This has to be one of the funniest moments in the PIPELINE PRO. Watch the interview at the end of the clip. Kaipo asks Machado, "WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT SUNNY GARCIA?" Rob replies, "HE'S GOT A STICKER ON HIS BOARD THAT SAYS...I LIKE POKE ( read pokay ) OR IS THAT POKE?" ( the Hawaiian slang word to engage in intercourse). Watch the way Kaipo turns to look at Sunny and get his answer. ALL TIME. If you listen carefully, you can also hear GERRY LOPEZ say, "BE CAREFUL"
